To Keep from PDX

you know i must have kept few things that were found on the stp (seattle to portland)and back roadtrip, right?!

that up there is a rebekah lodge pendant.  i have a collection of rebekah lodge items but had not ever seen this piece. i love what the order stands for and i am so curious and interested in anything having to do with secret societies, rituals, oath taking, mysteries, conspiracies, etc.
i was thrilled to discover it!  found at cargo.  and on sale!

this is a beautiful vintage needle case made in germany.  also found at cargo on sale.  you know how i always try to make everything into either a necklace or a hair clip?!  Well i am considering attaching a little loop to the back of this so it can hang on a necklace and be useful to me!  who woulda thunk it?!

ohmygosh i love these gold snake earrings so much!  also found at cargo on sale.  i have been wearing them almost daily and i will show you a wear-n-worn post soon where you can see how i have been wearing them with my fish, beaver, and owl necklaces.  its like a regular nature preserve on my body!  haha!

this wool blanket remnant is being made into a nice big long soft scarf/shawl.  i am loving the colorways and motif!

i got this book because i love the cover that looks like tree bark.  it is already falling apart so i will probably use the front and back covers in an art project.

this is a great piece of asian silk.  right now it's just hanging in the studio to inspire me.

another old falling apart book that i loved the cover of.  will also be used in a project.

another hand/home made rag doll to add to my personal collection.

another piece of opaque white bristol glass to add to my collection.

a blue silk and white dashed scarf.

a ginormous spool of red and white baker's twine.
(for the shop!)

these pictures do not do these justice, whatsoever, but these are two huge barkcloth curtain panels with the most gorgeous flowers and birds on them.  the colors a vibrant, bright and lovely!
they will either end up in my bedroom or over the pantry.
and lastly, another painted fungus!  yahooie!
found the wild cat one on the way to portland.
the one in the background was found at a garage sale a while back.
and i have one painted with wild flowers.
not sure if i will keep on with this particular collection.
it may end up at Smashing Rubbish.
i just love that its kinda weird and unusual.  of course!

Wear-n-Worn

i've been wearing this beaded clip more often.

i found the beaded piece a couple years ago and just hand sewed it to a pinch clip so i could wear it in my hair.
and these jingle jangle earrings are getting more wear now that i have been wearing my hair up more.  they get tangled in my hair if it's left down.  they are vintage and i love the colors in them.
the clip and the earrings go really well with this old poncho i dug out of the back of my closet recently.  it is also getting a lot of wear now!
i think the poncho is south american but i am not sure from where exactly.  i picked it up many moons ago at the thrift store.  i am liking wearing it over this embroidered eastern indian type cotton shirt.  this has become my go to outfit on cold grey bleary wet northwest days.  it cheers me up!

what's in the back of your closet?!

Home Vignettes (part 2)

i've invited you into this cabinet before here.
take another peek if you care to.  it's pretty much the same.

i'm sure you've seen valentino before too but i cant find the link to an old post.  anyhow, we got him for valentines day, maybe three years ago now.  hence the name, valentino. he's very old vintage taxidermy but still in great shape.  he often gets to wear seasonal garb, like a wreathe of flowers for spring equinox or a mask for samhain and dios de los muertos.

our french mounted boar's head looks almost small here.
he's huge in real life!
we have many many R.Atkinson Fox prints from Chad's dad.
most of them are in storage now but here are a few.

my favorite vintage crystal and silver chandelier.
a turn of the last century kids rocking chair turned on its side with a paper wasp nest nestled in it.
and my favorite vintage wood box covered with wood grain and lithographed paper that has birds on it.  it was found at the "take it or leave it: on lopez, for free.

large cement mushroom, tissue paper balls, and in-flight pheasant.

an old small chippy painted table turned on its side and missing its center, a couple basket covered bottles, a vintage vaseline glass apothecary jar from julie and a vaseline glass decanter. and old perfect-blue-color bird cage, another paper wasp nest, and the other side of the beloved lithographed wood box.

more of the box, plus my collection of imperfect ironstone pitchers (i wont buy them if they are pure white and they must look well used!), and two of my vintage paper mache owl decoys.  my orange enamel covered soup tureen is hiding behind all the wine...and so is the enormous copper jam pot my dad gave me last summer, up on the right.
more owl decoys, more pitchers, more ceramics, and the hugest zinc scoop i've ever seen (sticking out of ceramic crock)!

red enamel ladle from the paris flea market, and lots of enamel ladles and utensils, including butter melters and funnels.

my perfectly chippy kitchen gnome

3 wood boxes stacked and wall mounted full of more treasure:
french baking molds, an enamel spice jar from paris flea market, an alabaster lemon jar, a vintage thermometer, and a vintage milk glass hob nail vase holding french beaded flowers.
some blueish/green depression glass, and owl in your cup tea cup, some vintage New Orleans apothecary bottle bought there, a page from a victorian photo album, a stack of transferware butter pats that will get wall hung, 2 old letter press stamps of the circus/carnival, a silver and glass hinge top display box on which sits two stacking cups (hard to see print) that say "we are" (top one)"so good together"(bottom one)...bought at little winter in pdx on girls weekend, for chad and i.
my totoro lantern from pdx, some favorite mugs, a few of my mercury glass candle sticks, the ceramic duck planter that jeremy unearthed when digging at a job, a couple mortar and pestles, a "large" silver thimble shot "glass" that's engraved, "just a thimble full."

and this big guy is a vintage taxidermied capercaille, the largest of the grouse family.

my dad gave me this perfectly green rusty patina rolling three tier cart for my birthday a couple years ago.
it's one of my most favorite things.
we use it for our nature table.
this picture was taken when it was overflowing and in need of attention.
it now looks very tidy and ready for more nature goodness.

this is a small alter area where there is a niche in the wall that seems to made especially for it.
you can see there is quite a mix of religious and spiritual icons here: pagan, catholic, day of the dead, native american, etc.
the vintage jesus and mary alter is heavy old plaster and was carried back from new orleans on my very first trip there.  the black juju doll was made for my by my cousin and is covered in the best odd and unusual charms. i brought back the super vintage nun and st. frnacis stautes plus the large quartz crystals from costa rica and the totem poles are from various local places here.

and buddhist, new orleans juju, crystal-squeezer, fortune teller,
earth mama, goddess lovin paraphernalia from all corners and tribes of the world.

wall mounted vintage glass front cabinet contains the following:

vintage glass ware, vintage limoge/haviland set of dishes, vintage transferware, and a cupid vessel my grandma gave me when i was 16.
mexican heavy etched glass, vintage velvet box from mik, vintage blue paper flowers, a gold edged blue velvet victorian photo album, a blue painted zinc piece from nashville and a danish ceramic vase found in bisbee arizona.
more velvet boxes, more scandinavian ceramics, along with some usa ceramic including two pieces of van briggle, a gold studded small purse from nashville, a child's transferware teapot and pitcher, a vintage zinc flower ice cream mold and a collection of various glass ball-talon feet from old furniture.

i think that just about covers another episode of home vignettes for now.  could also be called, "jennette's butt-load of crappity crap hoarded in every nook and cranny possible" tour!
sheesh!
and that's after paring down, mind you.
my goodness....are you still with me?!!

well thanks to kathy's help i have a ton of linens that are clean, ironed and folded, ready to get priced and go out on the floor.
i also have a lot of vintage doll clothes that are just adorable.
plus the box of stuff that sarah sent from montana.
so there is a lot new still being put out for sale every day.
come take alook!

singing and dancing,

Vintage Alligator Purse

i found this vintage alligator purse in portland.
i had to have it because i am loving all things animal skin.
i know.  weird.
you should have seen how fast i snagged a dyed green snakeskin picture frame at the thrift store!
people were scared!

but see that peek of original shoulder strap up there.
wish i took a better picture of how bad it was.
barely holding on....bad shape.
so i cut it off.
and i added this little new but vintage looking scarf.
just looped it thru the available hardware, tied a know, doubled it up on itself.
and voila!

a super cute usable vintage bag.
sweet!
come and touch and see it for yourself.
for sale at Smashing Rubbish.

Wear-n-Worn

jasper helped with this little photo shoot!
and we used props!
notice the stool and quiver full of arrows!

this wear-n-worn features a little tank style dress printed with mushrooms that i found on the sale rack at anthropologie.  i think its meant to be lounge wear or pajamas.  oh well!

i threw a vintage black slip under it with the intention of having the slip ruffle peek out from under the dress.  and i paired it with my tall black boots that zip up the back and have a ruffle on each side of the zipper, also from anthropologie.
easy outfit and comfortable too.

off to target practice with my bow and arrows!,

The Pantry at Delancey Crab Dinner

Oysters on the half shell with apple mignonette
Pork belly confit with smoked salt
Johnnycakes with maple braised greens
...
Tomato-fennel soup with blue cheese toast

Boiled whole crabs
Roasted potatoes with sea salt
Melted butter, salsa verde and spicy aioli for dipping

Butter lettuce salad with radishes and chives

Lemon mousse trifle
Almond cake, toasted meringue and brittle

have you been to a family dinner at The Pantry at Delancey in Seattle?  this is where i have taken all the cooking classes i've talked about over the last six months.  chad took the pie ninja class because i was working here at the shop but then i got to take a french dinner making class, a moroccan street food class, a southern pies making class, and a candy making class.
fun stuff, let me tell ya!
that's chad and i at the new england crab feast dinner a few weeks ago.  we didn't know anyone there but it didn't matter.  we had a fun time meeting people and stuffing ourselves!  plus there is a wine pairing with every course and they do not skimp, let me tell ya that too! wowza!

if this looks like you kind of thing, check it out.  the classes sell out really fast and so do the dinners so i highly recommend getting on their mailing list and finding them on facebook.
i cant wait for them to list more family style dinners!

getting hungry,
xoxo

Vintage Flowers & Feathers

these vintage velvet flowers all got made into individual hair clips but i wasn't quick enough in posting them here before they all disappeared from the shop!  but what i do have left are these amazing vintage feather pieces that could also be made into hair clips:

perhaps they are meant to be old hat or millinery pieces?

any of these would make a great hair piece.  they can be attached to clips, head bands, or barrettes. or they could be pinned to your hat or your lapel.  swanky vintage stuff, don't you think?!

come see for yourself at Smashing Rubbish in Duvall, WA!

have a great weekend and i will post next week on all the new loot from my stp (seattle to portland) buying trip!

take care,
xoxo

Wear-n-Worn ~kids edition

here's my little fellow in his vintage garb.
he loves to dress vintage so we were both excited when i found these pieces, the cheetah sweater vest and plaid wide legs, at an estate sale recently.

we got lucky because all the kid stuff we found fit him perfectly.
we were both thrilled!

i am heading toward portland, or. tomorrow and will shop all along the way there and back.  i hope to find some new treasures for the shop so come by Smashing Rubbish next week to see the new loot.

and a reminder for my awesome Smashing Rubbish customers: i am considering shifting my shop open hours a bit to better fit the pattern of when i will actually have customers :)  so watch for the possibility of being closed on wednesdays (as well as our traditional mondays and tuesdays) and being open 12-5 on thursdays, fridays, saturdays and sundays (instead of 12-6 thur-sat).  if you have any input about this i would greatly appreciate hearing about it!  Don't be shy!  the shift in days and hours is being considered because i hardly have any customers on wednesdays and rarely have customers in the last hour between 5 and 6pm.  having wednesday to be creative in my studio and being home for dinner with my family will make a big difference to me personally so i am considering this probable change.  not sure how soon yet, or when, but i will certainly make every effort to keep my hours posted and current to keep you aware and abreast.
thank you for all your support SR customers!  you make it so i can stay in business here in duvall!  thanks!

Home Vignettes (part 1)

(milk glass plate painted with my favorite pansies, a pot metal bird head from New Orleans, and a hand form a vintage mannequin)

hey friends!
today i am going to document and show you some of the vignettes around my house.  i spent the "snow week" blissfully stuck at home, rearranging, clearing clutter, re-displaying, dusting, and sorting, and packing up a LOT of stuff to bring into the shop!

this is my collection of russian carved wood bear toys.  most of them have a wooden ball that hangs down and when you gently swing the toy in circles, the weight of the ball, attached to strings, makes the bears arms move up and down. pretty cute!
i have been inspired to collect old and odd toys over the years because my Aunt Karen always had a shelf full of cool old odd toys for use to mess with at her house.  and now she gifts us with cool old folk toys once in a while and we love that.

so i have a thing for figures and statues.  But they have to be interesting, odd, old or a bit, shall we say, deconstructed!
starting from the left: an almost naked guy corralling a rearing horse in heavy metal and the perfect patina of gold and silver.  in front of him is a gorgeous woman standing by a bird and holding a star wand in her outstretched hand.  the engraved plate on the front says la nuit, which means "the night" in french and i got her in Tucson.  the tall figure back behind her is old silver pot metal and is missing one arm.  in her other hand she holds a string with a bunch of fish.  not sure who she "is" but would like to find out.  next to her in the back is a very rough bronze cast of a woman in a frilled skirt/dress and a man holding a string instrument.  no markings and i wonder if its a student piece because it is so heavy and primitive.  in front of them, is the silver zinc man whose hand is raised and has a hole thru it to hold something, perhaps a torch.  now he holds a peacock feather. behind him is a very dapper gentleman i found in new orleans.  maybe not dapper....more....flamboyant, with the huge feather in his hat, knee high boots, and cape....a pirate perhaps.  next to him, the white lady, she is the top part of a broken garden statue made of plaster. she is very pastoral and keeps her hands folded.  the little gold 1920s woman figure in front of her is an incense burner from france.  and also from france is the chalk/plaster bust of a woman with dark hair atop a pedestal.
and there are others as you shall see...

a grouping of fuzzy vintage elephant bobble head, a sly Brownie, and a deity/goddess, Durga, i believe.

a tiny glass house and a very petite french globe

and an old metal train station.
all of the above are interspersed on an old wooden book shelf between books and whathaveyou.

here are some groupings of things on two matching tall bookshelves.
this is a shelf full of things from our Mexico trip, bead work, string paintings, painting, etc.

here you can see some of my vast collection of mercury glass.  the gold cherub candlestick i have had for over 20 years and found at a thrift store while in high school!  i collect old vintage picture frames and they just hang around until i can fill them.  the opaque white bristol glass is hand painted.  one is a vase and the other is a water decanter with a stopper that is a tiny cup!  the piece on the right is an antique french wedding display piece and right now it has a taxidermied turtle popping out of its bowl!

one very large wool carder, vintage binocular collection, a rough carved dutch wooden clog, aluminum topper with a butterfly image, and a huge plaster foot with a snake anklet.

some of my ocean/beach/sea collection

vintage bird beadwork, more mercury glass, old mirrors, a silver bird topped spoon holder, and my beloved stereoscope and card collection.  good old-timey fun!

mexican silver frames, vintage scopes and magnifying glasses, old beveled mirror, a velvet covered wood box, my beloved kerry kate doll, a silhouette of j, and my perfectly creepy and adorable velvet pixie from portland. here's a better picture of him cuz he deserves it:

i'm a freak for vintage luggage, boxes, and trunks.
any kind.  all the time.

mostly vintage leather camera bags, one dr. bag, a leather boy scouts first aid kit for your belt, and a chalkware swanky lady from Nashville.

glass front cabinet holds preserves and loot.
to the left you can barely make out the inner remains of an old pony saddle hanging on the wall, a vintage beekeepers veil hanging on the pommel, and a perfectly decayed violin hanging beneath that.
to the right you can see my growing collection of vintage nets with wood handles. they used to rest in our big picture windows but for now i am keeping the windows totally clear and bare.
below are some cabinet interior shots:

i think i have shown you my favorite ladies before.
these are vintage french plaster pin cushion dolls and tops.
perfectly odd, creepy, and decayed.
love!

on the left are two crowns i found diggin in a cruddy old shop in the french quarter in new orleans.  one still has the purple silk material and one doesn't.  the harvesting girl is a print on a little old wooden box, and the paper mache bird j made at art class. love!

here is a collection of small baskets i have made over the years.
the shelf edging paper is vintage and i love it.

that's an old scale with a dried shelf fungus in the back.  and a resin mushroom specimen and remains of a paper wasp nest too.

all my jams, marmalade, jellies, chutneys. and the other vintage shelf edging crepe paper that i adore.

and lastly on the two matching book shelves, a velvet framed mirror, a ceramic snake pot holding a cast metal snake head, two painted horns, a shoes brush advertising caskets, a piece of carved wood from nashville, a silver heron, a turkey leg holding a crystal ball, a wax head with one glass eye, a big metal 3D bee, an old clock, a covered scarab print jar that was the first thing chad and i bought together 18 years ago, and a floral engraving plate. whew! and the wooden guy below is this guy:

he holds a bowl and it holds crystals.
i am a sucker for any kind of wood carved figure.
bet you couldn't guess that, huh.

and an vintage owl on an old gourd bird house.

wow.  that's a lot of stuff.  and there is a lot more to document and show you here.  so stayed tuned for part deux.  there's another glass front cabinet full, the other glass front cabinet full, the alter shelves, the nature table, and other random bits of goodness you may, or may not, give a hoot about.  come back if you want to see.  it all has the potential to end up in the shop!

other news: i am going on a little buying trip to southwest washington and portland this coming weekend so there will be even more new stuff in the shop next week.  i will be posting about the new finds and other road trip adventures in the coming weeks.  also, watch for a possible shift in store hours.  you'll be the first to know.

Wear-n-Worn

love this prim and proper dress i found at an estate sale recently.
the turquoise and gold beaded necklace make it a little fancy.
and the belt.....i love the belt.

i had to sass it up a bit by wearing knee highs and tall boots

and then to make it saucy.... the fur leopard print coat was added.

gotta have a little sauce now and then if you want to keep things spicy!

What do you like to wear to dress up?  Vintage?  Modern?  Classic?

Do tell....

Wear-n-Worn

here is a little wear-n-worn to tide you over until i can get back to regular posting after the snow daze!

i have had this vintage kimono in rotation for many many years, like twenty, i think i have had it since high school!  And i recently discovered it again in the back of my closet!

i had gotten into the habit of always wearing cardigans and i have to remember that i have many other "cardingany-type" things in my closet to choose from!

here i paired the black and white kimono with a vintage frock i got last summer that just needed a few mends here and there.  i do think the "dress" is meant to be a house dress but i wear a black slip under it and and throw on my black knee socks and black boots and call it a dress to wear in public!

the dress has a fantastic asian inspired scene on it and has this great detailing on the pockets and collar.  oh yes, those who know me know i LOVE a dress with pockets!
its a good thing!

so in other news....it's saturday january 21 and the shop is finally open!  it has been closed for a week due to snow, ice and power outage.  our seating sale continues and i am adding clothing to the sale as well, for the next week!

all seating and clothing 20% off!

come by when you can and take a look.  since i was stuck at home for a week i also cleaned my house and culled many of my personal items to bring in to sell to you so they can meld into their new lives with y'all!  two car loads to be exact so it will take me some time to get it priced but little by little it will all be out on the floor!  come see!

hoping flooding and high winds stay at bay,

Beaded Goodness

this is an amazing, palm size, piece of bead work i got in Nashville in october.

it's a little pouch, beaded on both sides.

 another close-up.

the piece was begging to be made into a necklace so i dug out some old random and assorted jewelry chain.

i left the little odd silver bead hanging off the left there because i like the asymmetry of it.

i just sewed a jump ring on each side of the pouch and attached the chain to them.  and i left the dark green silk ribbon detail as well.

i love this.  a lot.  and i should sell it.  but i don't really want to.  hmmmmmm..... torture, torture i tell ya!

in shop news:  our seating sale, a.k.a "anything you can sit your lovely butt on" sale, is happening now!  at least 20% off all seating: chairs, chair frames, kids seating, benches, stools, folding chairs, rockers, etc.

Snake Skin

i was going thru a bunch of our books and came across this one with a snake skin print on the inside cover!

it came from this vintage book, First Book of Snakes.

and i was thrilled to make some copies of the snake skin print to use for projects, notes, letters, paper airplanes, origami, etc!  i made some colored and some black and white!
i heart snake skin and have also been wearing a silk snake skin print shirt lately.  i am all about the transformative and mythic powers of the snake!  watch out!

in shop news: our seating sale starts on Wednesday January 11 and goes to Sunday January 15th
all seats, chairs, chair frames, stools, benches, etc will be at least 20% off during this time!
i will also be having daily sales on random items.

Triangles: Wear-n-Worn

when i was in Nashville at the end of october i scored some really awesome vintage clothing.  i decided to sell a few of the pieces in the shop but the rest i have kept for myself, including this awesome vintage dress that has a really modern "blasting triangles" design all over it.

perhaps it's from the 70s.  it is polyester after all.

it's not easy to tell, but it buttons from the waist up, off center, and can be buttoned up for a very high neck.  i wear it with the top button undone so it flops open a little.

you can see i am also wearing an old vintage velvet jacket that i have had forever-and-a-day.  i forgot it was in the back of my closet but have now been wearing it again lately.

the velvet swing jacket just has one cool old original button at the top but i didn't get a good photo of it.  the vintage red glass beads add another pop of color and matched my tights.

i am finally giving in to doing regular outfit posts.  i have been taking photos of my outfits for a while now as a way to document what i have and sell, and also i like to dress up a bit and until opening the shop never had much of a reason too.  so now i want to keep track of what i wear, or have worn, and too, i did take that amazingly awesome self portraiture class last winter called You Are Your Own Muse.  so i am taking some self portraits, capturing mostly vintage outfits, and making a record of "wear-n-worn."

i have felt conflicted in the past, posting outfit pictures.  like, who cares.  but this is my blog, i love vintage clothes and fashion in general, i sell this stuff, and, well, like i said, this is my blog and if you don't like it, you don't have to look!

and then, too, there are the little coincidences and serendipity's in life and i don't like to let those go unnoticed!  when i got home from Nashville and was flipping thru my fall issue of Uppercase,

which, by the way, you should all be subscribing too, (let me just should on you all for a moment!,

there, of course, was a spread on the triangle!  it turns out triangles are quite the "in" design motif at the moment.  all the rage.  who knew?!  maybe they were "in" in the 70s too!

shop news:  i wanted to let you all know i will be having a sale starting next Wednesday, January 11.

the sale will be 20% off anything you can sit on!

yes, that's right.  all chairs, chair frames, stools, seats, and benches will be 20% off!

i will have other random and assorted items on sale each day as well but you have to stop by to find out what the sale of the day is!  or you can go over to Facebook and "like" the Smashing Rubbish page to find out!  i will post daily sales, each day next week, on the Smashing Rubbish Facebook page and i will "tweet" them as well so feel free to follow the shop on Twitter too!

i am trying to make room for some new merchandise as i will be going on a buying trip the first weekend in february and hope to have many new items to bring in for you to peruse!

stay tuned and thanks for your ongoing support!

New Year Capricorn

i was browsing over on fieldguided a while back and came across this utterly fantastic capricorn horoscope, that anabela commented on, devised by Susan Miller for Russh.

russh is an incredible australian fashion, beauty, arts, and music magazine.  and apparently, if i do say so myself, their astrologist has nailed it on the prediction/interpretation front!  check out how my year is bound to pan out people!  just look! :

Capricorn 2012 will be a great year to be a Capricorn. Recent years may have proved challenging. Fortunately you appear to be coming out of your difficult time and your outlook is rapidly becoming brighter. In 2012, Jupiter, the great giver of gifts and luck, will powerfully ignite your fifth house of creativity, initiating a huge trend, allowing you to come up with vibrant, original ideas. Rarely have you seen your imagination take flight in the way it will in the coming year.

The fifth house is not only your house of creativity but also your house of true and enduring love. If you are single and not dating, Jupiter in Taurus, until mid-June, will make that a banner time for meeting your one true love. Jupiter only comes by this house every 12 years, so this is news. If you feel that it is impossible to find love, and that it would take a major miracle for you to find romance, keep an open mind. Jupiter is certainly powerful and actually IS associated with miracles. If you are dating the wrong person, you are behooved to break up and start anew – it would be a shame to miss the exceptional help the universe will provide to you now!
By October 2012, you will be in a strong professional position and ready to tackle anything that life throws your way. You will see a noticeable reduction in tension. Gone will be the days that you will have to prove your worth to higher ups – you will have paid your dues and will have gained their respect.

In 2012, Mars will make an unusually long visit to your ninth house of foreign lands, higher education and learning, giving this area of life unusually strong emphasis. Your sense of adventure will be especially very strong during the first half of the year, and you will want to push the boarders of your world back, to give you a big worldview. Under this trend, you may return to college or graduate school, or volunteer to help a political candidate, you believe in. Or, you may do a great deal of reading of great thinkers, or delve into various religions of the world.

Financially, for fourteen years you have hosted nebulous Neptune in your second house of earned income. Neptune is never easy to host in a house dealing with money management, for Neptune brings its characteristic veil of confusion or mystery to whatever house it visits. Money may have been strangely hard to control. Neptune’s departure of your second house of money in early February 2012 will be a wonderful change, for finally you will be able to firm grip on financial affairs. There was one fine, upbeat exception to the rule and that is if you make your money through the creative arts. In that case, you were likely to launch your career nicely, for Neptune was working hard to help you see financial reward from your artistic expressions during that phase. Why such a different affect from Neptune? Neptune rules the arts, and in a financial house means you would gain from the arts. After Neptune leaves, you will continue to see financial rewards from your artistic expressions in future years now that you have established your contributions to your field. Neptune’s departure of your second house of money in early February 2012 will be a wonderful change, for finally you will be able to firm grip on financial affairs.

In so many ways, by the end of 2012, you will be well on your way to a more enjoyable life. You will have swept away all that is outworn and no longer effective, productive or of value to your future. In terms of the whole year, the first half of 2012 will glow brightest, with very late April and May your favorite months of 2012/ You'll be in a fine place creatively, romantically and even financially. By the end of 2012, may be more fit and healthy than you have been in years by year end. You'll feel lighter, happier and have a bounce to your step. You'll realize all that you endured was worthwhile, and you will know that your bright new future is one you had a strong hand in creating and that suits you perfectly.

holy cow!  how much stock can i put into this?!  i want in, i want in!  yes please, cosmos and the great mystery, give me this year!
i will definitely let y'all know how it goes! and by the way, hey baby, what's your sign?!

it's been a couple weeks of winter break over here and i'm trying to get back into the swing of having a studio and being a shop owner.  it's not easy my friends, to shift gears out of kids home, house improvements, lack of schedule, and back to the daily grind.  but slowly and surely i will get there.  treating myself to some patience and gentleness, along with a full body massage right before my first day back in the saddle!, to make the transition smoother, if possible.
the shop is open and there are new items.  i will be having a sale soon and also going on another buying trip at the beginning of february.  stay tuned and come say hi!

Gift Wrap

(this pile is for my cousin.  we spoil each other ROTTEN!, but in a really good way!)

every year my cousin, aunt, and i exchange gifts, that we have been gathering all year.  they taught me at a young age that presentation is of the utmost importance.  i am so thankful for their tutelage!
i LOVE wrapping presents!  especially when i have a creative idea in mind to make them ultra special.  if you have been in the shop you may have noticed my collection of ribbon.  beautiful ribbon is usually a major component of gift wrapping.  but you will see here that it's just as easy to come up with other solutions to finishing off a well wrapped gift too.

(this pile is for my auntie karen.  we will get back to these in a minute.)

have you ever seen these old-school flash cards from back in the day?!  they are pretty rad!  you can see here that i used them to convey messages!

most of this set of gifts is wrapped in mulberry paper.   it comes in all different natural looking shades and with different plant material embedded in it.  i love the homemade and natural look of it!

the following few gifts just have a simple tag attached for decoration.  these awesome silhouette tags came from my favorite stationary/paper store in ballard called Lucca.  love that place!  anyways, these are cut black paper silhouettes in glassine envelopes so you can see the silhouettes and they stay protected.  i know my cousin will like these and find a good use for them!

and then of course there are always old vintage photos to use for decoration.   easy peasy!
the one above if of a beach/swimming scene.

another of a family at the beach

i love this one!  it used to hang in my kitchen!
it's two best friends gettin their drink on!

i love any photos that show costumes!

this photo is so sweet!

and i had to include a spanish moss hanging from trees photo since my cousin and i are both obsessed with new orleans.  it's our thing!

so, thus, the okra seed pack too!

so you can see, that as a group, the whole lot works together.  it's cohesive yet textured and can be enjoyed as is for as long as it takes to get them opened!

here is the group for my aunt this year.  the "wrapping paper" is a vintage paper table cloth!  the colors are so great and the dogwood branches almost look as if they have been painted on the paper.  even though it's not super "christmasy" she will still love them!

here is a closer up detail of the paper and ribbon.  the three of use love ribbon and we often reuse the ribbon we give each other year after year.

something i started doing a few years ago is looking for really fantastic and unusual boxes to put the gifts in.  the more vintage, the better.  and the cool box just adds another layer of beauty that makes gift opening so so fun!  some boxes have been really funny and some so gorgeous they didn't even need wrapping!  i wish i would have thought to photograph these boxes but i forgot.   i will try to remember next time!

another wrap-tastic idea is to use old tissue paper sewing patterns for wrapping the gifts into the boxes, instead of plain old boring tissue paper.  especially if you are crafty, giving to a crafty friend, or just want to surprise the recipient.
there are so many beautiful ways to wrap gifts!

including my using vintage A Christmas Story wrapping paper for the boys!  what fun!

what's your favorite way to wrap?!

i'm putting our our new SkyDain Botanicals lotions, creams, and teas out in the shop!  come check them out!  they smell fantastic and make great gifts not to mention being so nourishing to your winter skin!  crafted by the lovely goddess Simone, fellow herbalist, right here in Carnation, WA.

and please remember, the shop will close early on Saturday December 24th, i hope to be gone by 3:30, so come grab your last minute things soon!  And then we will see you when we return, after a short break, on Wednesday January 4th!

rocking out in the shop to Yule B, Swingin Too, a new orleans christmas cd,

Birch Bark Press

when i was running last week, i found some birch trees in my neighborhood that had shed their bark.

i have this amazing and handy wood press that suze found for me at an estate sale.

you can see that you can just layer in the birch bark, in between sheets of paper and cardboard, and then crank and turn the press down to hold it tight and secure.

i set the press aside for a week or so

and when i took out the birch bark pieces, they were dry and flat!

now i have a pile of flat dry birch bark for projects.
yeah!

i have been feeding some other dry birch bark i have into my typewriter (in the photo above)and typing little messages.  i tear these out and glue them, very carefully, to the birch branch "tree" i have in the shop.   it takes the place of a "carved" tree trunk and its fun to find the random messages all over it.

i also love using this flat bark paper to write notes on, love letters, and poetry.  watch out friends!  i have a whole pile of birch bark now!

what would you do with it?!

p.s. don't forget, the shop closes by 4pm on Sat. Dec. 24 and reopens Wed. Jan. 4 and noon!
