Magical Woodland Tree Topper

here is the magical woodland tree topper i finally made!

it was inspired by the two below that anthropologie offered last year.  they were both close to $400 a piece!!
yeah, crazy, right?!

anthropologie's teeming forest tree topper

anthropologie's mythic nest tree topper

my friend natasha found this crazy plastic piece of who-knows-what on the side of the road and thought it was the right shape for a tree topper!  smarty party!

this is what the base looks like, upright, with moss and twigs glued to the bottom.  i used a glue gun for the entire project, which is one of my favorite tools, but i am still finding hot glue strands/webs to pull off each day!  and i covered the bottom so that when this is up on the tree, you don't see plastic when looking up at it.

i had been collecting material all year, saving little bits of this and that, knowing that we would finally attempt this project, this season!

before natasha had found this plastic piece i had begun to make a lot of tree topper bases out of strong cardboard and a cardboard toilet paper tube in the center.  i was envisioning the tube slipping nicely over the top of the tree and the lightweight base resting easily in the supporting branches near the top of the tree.

like this!  and even this odd plastic base is light enough for a small sturdy tree.

i still have several cardboard bases i will continue to work on but i think this one will be for my family.

a few weeks ago i had the idea to add some silver glass glitter to some very small paper-wasp nests i had.  i was thinking ahead knowing i would want to attach one to my magical woodland winter scene.  i think it looks rather awesome!

and here too, i had glittered some pieces of the inside paper comb.

another tree top image.  it really looks like a fantastic woodland crown on the top of the tree!

once i started gluing down moss and lichen covered sticks to the top of the base, i had more place to attach other items too and it just became a big interwoven puzzle.  working from side to side and back and forth made it easy to see where places needing filling in or covered up.

the beeswax candles are not meant to be burned.  they are just for magical woodland effect!  a while ago i was working on a gnome house project. i had used the tiniest grapevine wreath i could find, smaller than the palm of my hand, and tied ribbon to it to make it hang like a chandelier from the gnome house ceiling.  then i used these beeswax birthday candles to make it look like the tiny wreath had candles sticking up out of it, burned the tips and used the hot wax to secure the candles in the wreath, and voila!, a gnome chandelier was born!

so the little vintage candle clips that are holding these tree topper candles are meant to hold real candles, from back in the day, when folks were brave and daring and put real candles on their tree!
on the tree topper, like i said, they are just for effect.  i am not brave or daring when it comes to combining fire and dead, dry evergreen foliage!

the little vintage glass baubles, balls, pine cones, and sprays are just old odds and ends i find here and there and all are attached with a little dab of hot glue.

there are mushrooms, a bird, a variety of dried plant material, and even millinery supplies tucked in there!

and there is even a stag to face toward the back side in case you can ever get a glimpse back there!

i will keep working on bases and hope to have many made, and for sale, in the shop by next season!  I know, a whole 'nother year from now!  perhaps i will be able to get a few more done but i think most folks already have their trees up and topped for this year!

what's on top of your tree?

Metallic Gold Leather Bag & Pouches

here is the metallic gold leather bag i made from an upcycled and repurposed metallic gold leather skirt i found in nashville!

this photo makes it look more silver but it really is gold.

here is the back side and showing you the attached lining that i took out.

here i am just seam ripping, and seam ripping and seam ripping

here is the skirt inside out, no lining, and waistband detached

and here is another photo of the finished bag!

i made it with short handles, reusing the waistband, so it can hang off my arm or over my shoulder

it's lined with two different vintage fabrics and has a huge inside pocket

i like how in some light it looks more gold or less gold, but always metallic! i'm going to use it for a while. yeah, a new bag for me!

with some of the left over pieces i was able to make a few small zipper pouches!

one has a red zipper and one has a green zipper

both have the same vintage fabric lining shown here and both are for sale!

these would make adorable gifts!

get them while they last!

Weekend

saw these old bee skeps at Anthropologie over the weekend and love them.  wish i could add them to my personal collection!
i was there to buy this stack of salad plates:
which i love a whole lot!
and i left with 2 new dresses, a pair of shoes and a magazine too!
yikes!

chad helped me bottle my honey on friday night.
this is a honey hand!
here are some more pix from this endeavor:
pouring honey into the honey heater and dispenser.  you fill the walls of this amazing galvanized homemade device with hot water and then pour your honey in the middle and it makes it just warm enough to easily pour thru the attached spout.  brilliant!
thanks Jim for the loaner!
it was so exciting to bottle our knotweed honey!  we cant wait to do it again next year and are hoping to have twice as much!
there are two reasons i became a beekeeper.  one was that i had a huge fear of bees and being stung so i got a bug in my britches and decided it was time to conquer that fear.  hello fear, aaaand, goodbye!
and two, i wanted my own bees to make my own honey to use in my own elderberry mead making and for my preserves i put up each summer.  i wild harvest my elderberries and make all my own jams and i wanted my own honey to use.  this batch isn't enough to use for either mead or preserves but it is great in tea and on toast!
thank you bees!

i found my dream work table on saturday morning!
this photo doesn't do it justice but its the perfect height, is on wheels and i can put a shelf across the bottom if i want.  its almost exactly what i had envisioned!

so it's monday and i got new tires on my car.  also found out i have a leak in my radiator.   oh well.  not getting a lot done in the studio today.  gotta go pick up J soon to take him to his art class.  i want to remind those of you who are still reading that the shop will be closed the day before Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving day but will be open friday-sunday after Thanksgiving.  kathy will be here to take care of you!  whew!

i will try to get photos up of the new treasures i found this weekend that are now for sale in the shop.  and i will be working on getting out all the holiday/christmas/solstice decorations before i leave for thanksgiving weekend.
shop local and support your communities brick and mortar shops this season!
we need you!

shop-n-sip was such a hit that i plan to have an event like this at least once each season.  they will most likely occur after i have had time to design, create, and sew more goods and after major buying trips.  i am also committed to having a sale each season and these will most likely happen before each big buying trip to clear out some room for the new stuff!

it's been just a few days since my first "event" and i have a few more new bags made already!  I am also working on some smaller items that will make good holiday gifts.  keep SR in mind during your holiday shopping, especially if you are interested in unique, local, or handmade items.  we do have Saipua soaps and will soon have locally made vintage record album covered notebooks!

we will be closed Wednesday Nov. 23 and Thursday Nov.24
for Thanksgiving
but will re-open on Friday Nov. 25, thru Sunday Nov. 27
for all your holiday shopping needs!

la la land

hello my friends!

thanks for staying around while i wade thru the trials and tribulations of la la land, otherwise known as the new unfounded territory of business owner land of the lost hope to return one day and become somewhat normal again but not too normal cuz that would be really boring land of omg, working full time, never a dull moment land, so so so so much to do, family transitioning, roles shifting land, always wound up, hard to calm down, must breathe, need to meditate land.

la la land.

yes.

thanks for being here.

somebody get the cold champagne!

i've been feeling a bit like this dog with two broken legs. slow going, limping, whining..... everything takes so. much. time. to do, accomplish, and perfect. oh the patience. patience is a skill i have yet to hone and perfect. patience. please be my friend.

And yet.

Some days i feel like Grover here. like life is all good, not a single hard thing can touch me, i am indefatigable, a warrior, a lover, a champion, and full. full. full. full. of patience. i behave. my kids are angels. chad and i respect and honor one another. and i am channeling Grover. Gettin my Grover on!

I just want YOU to be happy!

So I will stop my kvetching and moaning and get along little doggie!
please hang in here with me, friends, while things shift, change and transpire.  the new shop is open and customers are coming in.  items are getting displayed and priced.  new items come in every day and soon i will have time to make new bags, new pillows, new treasures and whatnots. i will be carrying Tatine candles, Saipua soap and some local letterpress stationary, soon.  the record album sketch pads are coming in and also, fingers crossed, a gorgeous line of local handmade sterling and gemstone jewelry that you will love!

the Smashing Rubbish website, twitter and facebook page are in the works.  each will allow me to connect with y'all in different ways and for me to offer different specials and info on each. so if you prefer to stay informed of all Smashing Rubbish has to offer, join me on each platform.  look for my class and events schedule on the website when it goes live.  cigar box ukulele making class, anyone?!

I have so much to share with you so i hope to return to regular blogging from here on out.  i still haven't shared the revamped Fireball with you, or our Breathe Owl Breathe backyard concert, or the amazing treasures and finds i am uncovering daily. the focus will shift a bit, toward the goings on, ins and outs, of the studio and shop, but i will continue to share my finds, projects, ideas, life and creativity here too.

come see me at Smashing Rubbish World Headquarters!

Brick and Mortar

it is true.
and it is official.
i am in the process of opening my own studio and shop.
near my home.
and close to my kids' schools.
it's kinda a big deal.
(doing a bit of demolition to an old dressing room)

i now own a business.
(demo half done.  almost.)

and i have a j.o.b.
(second dressing room.  gone.  now putting up wall to make last one into fabric storage)

i am terrified and giddy, all at once.
(starting to move in)

i'm in the eye of a storm: the cleaning, moving, organizing, preparing, website building, logo designing, bank account opening, sign securing, lease signing, etc.  i know this is the grinding work of getting to opening day and that it wont continue to be this intense and daunting 24/7.
and i am trying to enjoy a bit of it as i go.
(sooooo much to do!)

after the first whole day of moving and cleaning i sat in a comfy chair, in the almost dark, twilight, quiet shop, by myself, and cracked a cold beer(there was no Sophia on hand, Erin and Natasha!), and sat back and thought:
i think this will be ok.
i think i can handle the emotional roller coaster.
i think i can handle how vulnerable this makes me feel.
i think i can manage to let go a bit, just a bit, of the perfectionism and control-freakness that binds me up.
i think it's alright that, in this moment, i can switch from deep deep gratitude, peaceful serenity and utter enoughness, to big wet salty tears, deep doubt and unworthiness and stone cold fear.
i think all this means i am alive.
and i do believe it's a privilege to get to feel it all.  all of it. hard and easy. light and heavy.  rough and smooth.

(lots to sort, sift, dust, organize and display)

ohmygawd!  I FINALLY have MY OWN studio and shop!!!

you people out there who know me:  how long have i been talking about the "eventual shop," my "one day store, my "someday studio"?  like....   forever!

it's happening.

a dream is coming true one day at a time in little ol' Duvall, WA.

well, exactly at 15922 Main St!

items are arriving, car load by car load.

i hope you'll come visit and see what's new down here!

it's amazing what you can do with a little rope, some bungee cords and an open sun roof!

i am trying to open by july 2 and i hope to be open
thursday-saturday noon-6 and sunday 12:30-5.

wish me luck friends!  and don't be shy about stopping by!

12:41 AM.   must. go. to. bed. :)
