Roses

we harvested our rose buds to make rose chains.

we harvested rose petals to make rose apple cider vinegar, rose honey, and rose water.
to make rose honey and rose vinegar, simply fill a quart jar to the top with rose petals,
and pour in your carrier.
here august is mixing in the honey.
here is rose petals in ACV (apple cider vinegar)
jasper making his rose chain
fresh rose chain hanging in the window

here are a few rose chains dried

these are decorative and will just be draped around to remind us of early summer.

what will you harvest next?  my raspberries and black currants are on.  gotta go pick!

i'll be back soon with many more posts, including one about the amazing World Domination Summit that i attended over the weekend in portland, oregon.  it was a-mazing!

hugs, kisses and berry juice fingers,

Strawberries

washed

hulled

sliced

jammed!

also have my annual summer solstice strawberry balsamic vinegar brewing.  and have put up enough strawberries in the freezer to keep me in berry chocolate cobbler for the coming year!

it's looking like this will be a fantastic year for blueberries as my shrubs are overflowing.  but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
raspberries are coming on and its time to pick, pick, pick!

what are you putting up this year?

dirty aprons and messy kitchens,

A Sign

i got a new sign to hang outside the shop!

it's double sided, hand painted, and locally made.

it will hang adjacent to the door so you can see it coming down the street, either way.
also, i am going to make some small signs to hang from it.  for those of you who have been to the Smashing Rubbish shop, which would you say most aptly fit?  i'm trying to pick 3 of these: "vintage", "handcrafted", "home", "curiosities", "eclectic", "handmade"
or do you happen to have any other suggestions?
do share!

deep in the midst of Jenny Lawson's new book and can not stopping
laughing and cringing....perfect!

Sewing Necklace

i made another necklace out of vintage "fixins and findins" that is "supposed" to be for sale.
i should have never added the CEW charm to it.
i "suppose" it's mine to keep now....
when will i ever be able to let these things go?!
note to self: stop attaching personal items to treasures you want to be able to let go of and sell...
the "sewing necklace" is all you need to do your mending on the run!
do you remember this sweet little needle/pin case i found at cargo in pdx?
the one that doesn't have a loop for attaching...
well i found another!
lucky me!
with a loop!
this one, which is more square, and less rectangular, was scored from my friends Dan and Cindy when they had a space in the antique mall next to Smashing Rubbish.
and it was on sale!
this lovely little CEW charm is added in fun and really has no useful purpose other than to remind me i love my husband, CEW!
the vintage velvety baby strawberry is the dangle from an old pin cushion and is quite useful as i can sharpen my needles/pins in it!

yes, the awesome scissors are sharp and pointy.

and that extra bit of vintage chain/necklace goodness is also just for the heck of it.
always be prepared.
it will be one of the foremost tenets of the society i am founding, likely to be named: The Not So Secret Society Of Exposed Rough Edges.
or tnsssoere, for short (!)
ha!

more on the not secret society soon,

Hawthorn

i harvested Hawthorn a few weeks ago.
i waited just a day too long and had to get wet to gather May, as it is called in england,
but it was well worth the rainy adventure.

hawthorn is a favorite of mine.
jasper's middle name is hawthorn.
hawthorn is for the heart and happiness: literally, symbolically, physically, and metaphorically.
Rosemary Gladstar reminds us that, "though little is mentioned in literature, hawthorn is a wonderful remedy for 'broken hearts' and for depression and anxiety.  it is a specific medicine for those who have a difficult time expressing their feelings or who suppress their emotions.  hawthorn helps the heart flower, open, and be healed."
i love to harvest the flowers of crataegus , which bloom on this small deciduous tree or large shrub near mother's day in the pnw, to use in tea. the flowers are 1/4 inch across and form in terminate clusters, each blossom having five petals and many stamen.  and in the fall i will collect the mildly sweet haws (berries/fruit) to use in tea too, or perhaps ferment into wine or mead. these are small, red to black in color, and have 2 to 5 seeds each.

hawthorn is part of the Rosaceae family and provides us with one of the best tonic remedies for the heart and circulatory system.  as a tonic, hawthorn will move the heart to normal function in a gentle way.  thus it can be argued that hawthorn is the premier heart tonic of herbal medicine.
word.
hawthorn is said to have a "dead" odor but i don't agree. i love the smell and there is nothing else like it...
very distinctive scent and defines a short lived season.
too it is said that the ancient greeks and romans regarded the hawthorn as a symbol of hope and happiness so it was used in bouquets and corsages in wedding ceremonies.  it has been believed to keep evil spirits away so it was used in babies' cradles. it is supposed to bring fairies into houses and is sacred to the fairies.  hawthorn is part of the tree fairy triad of britain: "oak, ash, and thorn," and where all three trees grow it is said that one may see fairies.
it is unlucky if gathered before the first week of may.

hawthorn grows where people are and you will often find them on old abandoned homesteads.  the thickets and hedgerows of hawthorn serve as important forage and nesting habitats for birds and other wildlife. also, as R. Gladstar has mentioned, "the hawthorn tree has been planted in or near most herb gardens and has been revered and surrounded by legend for centuries."
hawthorn flowers and berries have been used in chinese medicine for thousands of years.  the berries are often turned into jam and have sufficient natural pectin in them to not require any extra be added. also, the berries tend to require very little artificial sweetening as these "thorn apples" tend to be mildly sugary raw.
the thorns characterize this member of the apple family even in winter. its curved thorns are 1 to 3 inches and are strategically spaced along the branches, often at eye level.  when you get poked, it hurts.  the wood of hawthorn is very hard and therefore a favored tool wood.

my favorite ritual and magical uses of hawthorn come in the ancient stories of times when hawthorns were believed to be witches who had transformed themselves into trees.  it is known that witches have long danced and performed their rites beneath the thorn.  in the past, all witch's gardens contained at least one hawthorn hedge.
my land contains three.

after i plucked all the flowers and leaves of my harvested branches, i layed the flowers and leaves out to dry for a few days.  as it had been raining during collection, i needed to be sure they were very well dried before packaging them.  i saved all the magical hawthorn wood, tied it in a bundle, and hung it in my wood shed to dry.  i will use the wood for amulets and talismans at a later date.  for now i am enjoying cupfuls of hawthorn flower tea that i sweeten just a tich with honey from my honey bees.
it is a fine life i live,
if i do say so myself.

wild harvest,

Green Cart

this is one of my favorite things in my house, this green cart or trolley, as i just discovered it is called in the UK.
my dad gave me this cart/trolley for my birthday a few years ago.
he knows me well.
and yes, in this photo it is a mess, but normally it is used as our "nature table" (as if the whole house hasn't already become our "nature table"!)
it's that boho naturalist styling thing i go for...

my dearest friend Suze just lent me her copy of the UK Country Living magazine, Country Home.
it is a gorgeous magazine filled with inspiring images and ideas.
and on page 113, in the decorate your kitchen section, look what i found:

my cart!
the trolley my dad gave me was found at a gardening center in eastern washington.
i wonder where the UK twin was discovered?
quelle coincidence!

in other news, smashing rubbish news, today is the last thursday that the shop is officially open until fall!
i will have the shop open EVERY Friday and Saturday, unless otherwise posted, but i won't be open other days unless i get a wild hair, a spontaneous burst of shop opening energy, or some random urging to open it up.
if you see lots of cool loot out on the sidewalk in front of the shop, that means i have given into the random, wild, spontaneous urge and opened the doors for the day!
otherwise, you can expect to find us open EVERY Friday and Saturday thru the summer, noon to 6pm.
come see us when we are open and plan ahead if you need Smashing Rubbish merch for a gift or event.
my phone number and email are posted on the shop window so you are welcome to call for a viewing appointment as well, any time, and i will do my best to accommodate you!

thank you for your continued support and kindness friends!
i am going to take time this summer to get my balance, play with my kids, and be creative in ways i have not had time for this past year.  thanks for hanging in here with me, checking in , and leaving your sweet comments.  i will be continuing to blog and document all my finds, projects and experiences here so stick with me a little longer as we return to our regularly scheduled programming!

heading to the ocean for the weekend while kathy tends shop,

You Can Count on Change

change is in the air again my friends.

you can always count on change.

i wanted to let you all know that
Smashing Rubbish Studio & Vintage General Store
is going to stay in business!
my lease is up at the end of june so i have been negotiating with my landlady to see if we can come to an agreement about the space i lease from her.
i have asked her for less space.
yes, it is true. i want to downsize and simplify.
i cannot currently run a sustainable "brick and mortar" business with the amount of square footage i rent, for the amount of time i am willing to be there, or rather, that it makes sense for me to be there, according to when i actually have customers.
i do like having my studio and sewing/project workshop space in the back of the shop...that definitely works for me.  so with all this in mind i have been considering how to shift once again, "grow" a bit smaller, lower my monthly rent, and stay in business in this sweet and generous small town i love.
the answer has come in the opportunity to diversify.
i was offered a vendor space, once more, at the new and improved M&M Antiques in monroe.  I started vending at M&M over 4 years ago and stopped when i opened my own shop down the valley in duvall.  M&M has moved locations and is now located in the old
St. Vincent De Paul building:  123 N Lewis St. Monroe, WA.
the "new" building is huge, bright, clean, has more vendors, and is getting filled with tons of awesome treasure!
M&M has the customer base to be open 7 days a week 11-6pm so it made sense for me to take space there again so i'd have a place to rotate/cycle my treasures thru and be able to really sell/move it.
also, taking space at m&m allows me to downsize my store to a more reasonable (for me), manageable, smaller level that suits me better for now.  although i have my current space leased thru july 1, i have started to move into the smaller, tiled floor, lower, studio/shop side already.
from 1000 square feet down to 300!
it made sense for me to start rearranging now since all  my displays and vignettes were being taken apart anyhow while moving selected items to m&m.
(that said, the large side of my shop, the carpeted side where the front entry has always been, is going to be available by june 1 at the latest.  if you know of anyone/business that could use 700 sq feet of main street store frontage, let me know and i can put you/them in touch with the building owners.)
and so.... what i am leaning into for summer shop open hours is the possibility of only being open fridays and saturdays.  i have already started closing on sundays and i will stay open on thursdays until my kids are out of school near the end of june.  but after that, i need to have hours i can manage and time to be with my children, soak in summer, and be outside!
i am hugely considering asking you readers here, my awesome customers, my friends who stop in, my family who supports me, and my small town, to help me by coming here to shop, specifically when i am open, to see what is new, purchase a gift, or buy a treasure for yourself!  i greatly encourage you to get on my mailing list, as well as subscribe here, so that you will know when my seasonal shifts in open hours occur.  you can send me an email with your name and email address at smashingrubbish@gmail.com and i will add you to my mailing list (which is only ever used to inform you of big changes like these, mainly shop hours and sales!).

smashing rubbish also has a facebook page which will always state info about open hours, sales, photos of new items, etc. so if you do fb, go over there and like my sr page.

you are more than welcome to contact me for viewing hours by appointment, and like i said i am still
open noon-6, thurs-sat,
until the end of june.

the bonus to having these limited hours is that you will most likely always be seeing new items in the shop each time you come in.  i will bring new items here first and cycle older items over to m&m to make room for the new vintage loot at smashing rubbish. i will still have my handmade items in both locations and am considering having a certain "look" (genre or era) at m&m that i don't have room for at smashing rubbish....we will see.

 three cheers for change!
change is in the air....
and you can always count on change

ever yours,
xox

Strange Dolls

i took all my armless dolls and gave them wings.
they are kinda weird

and very strange

a little unusual

and slightly ethereal

i love strange dolls.
do you?

collection can be viewed and purchased at
Smashing Rubbish

sunday noon-5
(closed mother's day sunday)

Shop Closed Mother's Day!

the shop will be closed this sunday in honor of mother's day...
and our operating hours will be changing significantly for summer and that drastic change shall happen shortly...
i will let you know.

working on/in the "new" shop (same location)and have been writing a blogpost about it for some weeks now but can't seem to make a choice about hours of operation for the summer. am trying to avoid being flaky, by pinning myself down to "regular" hours, but alas, to all our chagrin, i can not seem to commit. may end up having "fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants" hours this summer but more likely to go down to 2 days a week and be open
friday and saturday
noon-6

when this is all set in stone and not subject to change, you will be the first to know.
until then, wish me luck in this massive downsizing, rearranging and moving extravanganza i am taking on.
i will need it...

yours truly and forever more,

p.s. check out my space at m&m antiques in monroe if you need a Smashing Rubbish fix and i'm not open :)

Floral Geometric Velvet Bag

i made myself another bag from a vintage skirt
i used an unused belt for the straps
i lined it with material from a skirt i used to wear

i like the shape of bags made from skirts.
and i like the "bigness"
here is the skirt layed out, unaltered.
the skirt came with a matching fitted jacket that i kept
i love the floral and geometric goodness/combo going on here

Baby Maple

found this baby maple when i was weeding the garden.
just like this.
so i carefully potted it up and set it on my kitchen window sill,
and each day more leaf peeked out.
and then it dropped its "helicopter" casing,
and is beginning to look like a small maple tree!

horse back riding two days in a row!,

I Am Magical Dress

i am still not entirely sure about the mock-up of this "i am magical" dress.
is it magical as in: i am in a circus...yay?!  or magical as in: i ate magic mushrooms and this is what i choose to wear today to prove it?!  or magical as in: life's too short to care what others think and i need to be colorful/magical sometimes....(ok, lots of the time!)?!
it is a VERY different look from the one shown in the book...

this is the book the pattern came from and yep,
that is the "i am magical" dress on the front.
and i love the version they show.

and another view.
my version is REALLY different, right.
I know.

the pattern had obvious measurement flaws right off the bat.
so i corrected those and decided to use an old indian bedspread fabric for the body and some odd crocheted/knit(?) pieces for the bodice front and the arms.
use what you have, i figured.
especially for the first go round.
and especially if you are feelin the magic...
i had some orange butcher paper so i used it to make the pattern.
my friend uses old wallpaper to trace out her patterns and if i come across some that is wide enough and isn't too brittle, i will too.
this is the back of the dress pattern piece
here is the dress/tunic without chest and arm pieces.
i rather like it just so.
in the construction of this, i found a few more flaws, or at least instructions that didn't account for the very "finished" way i like my garments to be.  a once turned hem just won't do...nor will a once turned neckline...
i guess i was just anxious to find a use for these odd crocheted/knit(?) pieces...and so here they are.
i guess i need to come to terms with this just being a mock-up and nothing more.
it is what it is.
yes, i've tried it on.
and it is kinda cute.
maybe its all the colors that throw me off.
i feel kinda clownish...
or magical....
is it bad or is it ok?
be honest.
see.
i can't decide.
usually that means: not so much.  not so good.

i will forge ahead and try again. i made several notes on the pattern pieces so that i can make it better next time.
i do like the cut and "style" of it so i am going to try making it totally opposite of the first attempt in some very opposite colorway and material. and make it as a dress, not a tunic.  gotta remember to cut it much longer next time...

here's to being magical, in all its shapes and forms,
xoxoxo
